Matthew Davies Shares How to Improve Self-Awareness

Introduction

People lacking self-awareness have a hard time finding their identity and place in the world. Also, in the grand scheme of things, “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.”- Aristotle. Having self-awareness is to have a strong sense of your personality, strengths, and weaknesses; on your thoughts, motivations, and emotions. In this post, Matthew Davies shares a few tips on how to improve your self-awareness and become a better individual from what you are today.

Tips and Tricks

  1. Develop an Objective Point of View – Looking at yourself objectively can be a difficult and scary task. Human beings can become extremely destructive creatures if they cannot keep their emotions in check. If negative emotions settle within your mind, it can corrupt you with low self-esteem and jealousy.

Discovering yourself can be a euphoric experience too. It can help you to accept yourself as an individual along with all your faults and shortcomings. This is important as you can only improve yourself once you know what to improve upon.

Here are a few exercises to get you started:

* Understand yourself, note down your ideas and perceptions. Having a visual guide greatly motivates your urge to improve your faults and further hone your skills.

* Reminisce about the achievements you’ve achieved in the past. Let them guide you through the hard times instead of flattering you when you’re well off.

* Be honest with yourself and advise others around you to do the same.

  1. Maintain a Journal – Keeping a journal is greatly therapeutic. Every day the mind is bombarded with millions of thoughts and worries. Often, the mind loses its ability to regulate all those thoughts and stops working altogether. To ensure optimal performance of your brain, you must note down the ideas and make way for new ones.

Recording your thoughts relieves the mind. Take some time off every night to write down your thoughts, feelings, achievements, and failures for the day. Once you start acknowledging these thoughts and reflect upon them, you will become aware of the parts of yourself that you need to work upon.

  1. Note Down Your Goals – A dream without a goal cannot become a reality. To find your place in the world, you must have a purpose. Throughout your life, you will come across various goals you want to achieve. At the age of 5, you wanted to be a doctor. At 16 you wanted to be a drummer, and finally, at 22, you decide to join the corporate life, sitting in cubicles, typing away at your computer. Your dreams might seem unachievable even in the distant future.

However, you should not lose hope. Noting down your goals and breaking them into small steps will not only help you tackle them effectively but encourage you to pursue them with everlasting enthusiasm.

Conclusion

Improving your self-awareness is the best ability you can develop as a human being. As you grow up, you’ll have to take up responsibilities and also be responsible for your actions.
